Cyrus the Great was born around 600 BCE in the region of Persis, in what is now southern Iran. He was the son of Cambyses I and grew up during a time when the Persians were under the rule of the Median Empire. Around 550 BCE, Cyrus led a successful rebellion against Astyages and united the Persians and Medes under his leadership.
