Ardashir I was born around 180 CE in the region of
Persis, in present-day southern
Iran. Rising from local nobility, he gradually consolidated power in southern Iran and challenged the declining
Parthian Empire. By 224 CE, Ardashir defeated the last Parthian king,
Artabanus IV, establishing the
Sasanian Empire. He strengthened central authority, reorganized the administration, and promoted Zoroastrianism as a unifying religion, laying the foundations for a powerful and enduring Persian empire that would rival Rome for centuries.
