In the months that followed, Richards faced a long and painful journey toward recovery. Multiple surgeries were required to save his life and to begin the process of reconstructing his face. Doctors were forced to remove one of his eyes, and several reconstructive procedures, including free flap surgeries, were performed to replace damaged tissue.
