Eventually, his innovative work reached the highest levels of the Russian Empire. Tsar Nicholas II recognized the potential of Prokudin-Gorsky’s project—not only as an artistic endeavor but as a way to record the empire’s vast territories and diverse cultures for future generations. Impressed by the photographer’s skill and ambition, the Tsar granted him access to resources, travel permissions, and even a special train car equipped for photographic work.
