One of the most striking examples of opportunism in nature can be seen in the Arctic fox. Known primarily as a scavenger, it does not hesitate to seize an unusual meal when fortune presents it. Images once captured showed an Arctic fox carrying the severed head of a wolffish in its mouth. Normally, these foxes do not pursue such formidable marine creatures. Yet, along coastal zones, where tides and chance provide unexpected meals, the fox demonstrates that flexibility can mean the difference between life and starvation.
