The same can be said of my own preferred pointless activity of choice - staring approvingly at paintings on the walls of art galleries. Some of these paintings are thought of as the highest attainment of human endeavour - higher even than the ability to kick a ball between two posts. Art galleries, as you may have noticed, often look and feel uncannily like temples, emphasising the supposedly transcendent nature of their contents.
